WGTE offers radio, TV holiday specials

The holidays are a time for traditions. WGTE’s holiday program line up is a favorite tradition throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

Wednesday, December 20

7 p.m.:Toledo Jazz Orchestra Holiday Concert – a jazzy tradition for many families, the TJO presents arrangements of well-known holiday tunes for all to enjoy.

8 p.m.: Paul Winter’s 36th Annual Winter Solstice Celebration – celebrate the return of the sun and the warming of the heart at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine to hear The Paul Winter Consort and the glorious Cathedral Pipe Organ. 

 

Thursday, December 21

8 p.m.: Handel’s Messiah from the Toledo Symphony – The TSO joins forces with local choirs and international vocalists for an annual Holiday tradition, performed at Rosary Cathedral.

 

Friday, December 22

8 p.m.: Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir – The choir continues its tradition of great artistry with touching arrangements of familiar carols, and surprises with lesser-known melodies that are fast becoming the new classics.

9 p.m.: Carols & Cheer – Host Scott Blankenship joins forces with Matthew Culloton, artistic director of The Singers, to review their favorite carols this holiday season.

 
Sunday, December 24

10 a.m.: A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols – The 30-voice King’s College Choir performs the legendary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service of biblical readings and music.

12 p.m.: Welcome Christmas! – A perennial Christmas favorite from VocalEssence, one of the world’s premier choral ensembles. 

1 p.m.: The New Standards Holiday Special – A unique twist on traditional holiday concerts – one-part variety show, one-part homage to the season, one part irreverent, free-wheeling spectacle presented by The Current.

2 p.m.: The Big Tiny Desk Holiday Special – Celebrate the season with amazing holiday performances including Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Steve Martin, Hanson, The Polyphonic Spree and more!

3 p.m.: Tinsel Tales 3: Even More NPR Christmas Favorites – Third edition of extraordinary Christmas stories that will transport you to unexpected places.

4 p.m.: Tinsel Tales 4: So Much More NPR Christmas Favorites – Fourth edition of extraordinary Christmas stories that will transport you to unexpected places.

6 p.m.: St. Olaf Christmas Festival –  Includes hymns, carols, choral works, as well as orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity and featuring more than 500 student musicians in five choirs.

8 p.m.: A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols – Repeat presentation

 
Monday, December 25

9 a.m.: Christmas with the King’s Singers – It’s an a cappella Christmas from England with one of the world’s most celebrated vocal ensembles.

10 a.m.: The Canadian Brass: Christmas Time Is Here – Holiday favorites, including the beloved Vince Guaraldi songs from A Charlie Brown Christmas.  

1 p.m.: An Anonymous 4 Christmas – The legendary Anonymous 4 sings medieval music from England, France and Spain that praises the Virgin Mary.

2 p.m.: A Masterworks Chorale Christmas – The Masterworks Chorale of Toledo present their annual Christmas Concert, “Radiant Midnight.”     

7 p.m.: Joy To The World – A Holiday in Pink – Pink Martini bedecks the airwaves with festive holiday songs from across the globe.

8 p.m.: Tinsel Tales 4: So Much More NPR Christmas Favorites – Repeat presentation     

9 p.m.: Jonathan Winters’ A Christmas Carol –  Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens’ holiday classic.

10 p.m.:  A Concierto Christmas Special 2017 – A bilingual holiday edition featuring a broad range of sacred and seasonal selections, spanning from Renaissance Spain to the 20th century in South America and the U.S. Southwest.              

 
Tuesday, December 26

7 p.m.: A Season’s Griot 2017 – This one-hour celebration in story and song is public radio’s only nationally syndicated Kwanzaa program. Hosted for 22 years by acclaimed storyteller Madafo Lloyd Wilson, this annual special captures the tales and traditions of African American and African peoples.

 
Monday, January 1

11 a.m.  – New Year’s Day from Vienna 2018 – The Vienna Philharmonic presents its ever popular annual New Year’s Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. You’ll hear your favorite waltzes, polkas and more — a festive way to start off the New Year. Presented by NPR Music.

9 p.m.: Christmas at Belmont 2017 – Enjoy a spectacular holiday performance by nearly 700 student musicians and faculty from the Belmont University School of Music.

8 p.m.: Christmas with the Duttons – Three generations of the Dutton family celebrate the season with song, dance and comedy.

 

Sunday, December 24

6:30 p.m.: WGTE Presents: Toledo Jazz Orchestra Holiday Concert – The Jazz orchestra plays holiday pieces from many of the great jazz big bands and arrangers. Repeats December 28 at 10 p.m.

10:30 p.m.: ACL Hall of Fame New Year’s Eve – Roy Orbison, Rosanne Cash and the Neville Brothers are inducted into the ACL Hall of Fame.
