Toledo Jazz Orchestra to celebrate Gene Parker, April 27
The Toledo Jazz Orchestra will present “Happy Birthday, Gene Parker!” Saturday, April 27 at 8 p.m. in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.
The concert will feature Parker in a celebration of his 80th birthday last summer.
Parker has been a professional musician in the Toledo area for more than 50 years. He has played and taught saxophone, clarinet, flute, vibraphone, bass, piano, trumpet, trombone, the B3 Hammond organ, electronic keyboards, Latin percussion, and MIDI instruments.
Pianist Aaron Diehl stepping in to play ‘New World A’Comin” with Toledo Symphony, April 26
Pianist Aaron Diehl will be the featured soloist when the Toledo Symphony Orchestra presents “A New World A’ Comin'” Friday, April 26, at 8 p.m. in the Valentine Theatre, 410 Adams St., Toledo.
The scheduled soloist Lara Downes has canceled her appearance because of a family emergency.
Diehl will be the soloist o“New World A’Comin’” by Duke Ellington.
Also on the program, conducted by guest William Eddins, will be: “On the Town: Three Dance Episodes” and “Symphony No. 8 in G major” by Antonin Dvorak. (“A Lovesome Thing” by Billy Strayhorn will no longer be performed on this program.)
Diehl has been praised for his “melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint” by The New York Times and his “traditional jazz sound with a sophisticated contemporary spin” by The Guardian.
Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet to perform show at Owens, April 25
The Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet will perform an Accent on the Arts concert Thursday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, 7270 Biniker Road, Perrysburg, on the Owens Community College Toledo Campus.
The Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet “masterfully blends rhythms, sounds, and textures from across the globe.” Featuring oud, violin, electric bass, synthesizer, and world percussion, they are fueled by the spirit of jazz, world music and improvisation.
Before the concert, beginning at 6:30 in the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery attendees can also visit “Gratitude,” a solo exhibition by Tamara Monk and “Passages,” the gallery’s Juried High School Art Show.
Accent on the Arts is a free concert series designed, booked, promoted, and presented by Music Business Technology students. This is the final event in the 2023-2024 series.
Novel Blends hosts local authors, April 27
Novel Blends Bookstore and Café, 116 S Main St, Bowling Green, will be hosting two author book signings on Saturday, April 27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“The Immigrants Wife” by J.B. Harris is an emotional book that delves into the challenges and harsh realities faced and the discrimination experienced in 1900’s America.
“What Happens in Montana” by Kim McCollum is a quick and engaging read that uses parallels between past and present to illustrate the myriad ways in which the very best and worst of human nature remain largely unchanged over time.
Toraigh to perform Rockin’ for Democracy show, April 28
The BG Fair Districts anti-gerrymandering campaign will host a Rockin’ for Democracy show featuring the Irish band Toraigh 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 28 at The Speakeasy.

Cocoon offers virtual session on ‘Supporting Survivors in the Workplace,’ April 30
The Cocoon will host a virtual session “Champions of Change: Supporting Survivors in the Workplace,” April 30th at noon. Those wishing to participate should email r.guidera@thecocoon.org to receive the Zoom link.
The session will discuss opportunities for organizations to access training to help them reach this level of new corporate social responsibility “because investing in the well-being of your employees is investing in your business.”
The virtual event is free.

‘Marisol: A Retrospective’ continues at the Toledo Museum through June 2
“Marisol: A Retrospective,” an exhibit featuring work from throughout the artist’s 60-year career, including “The Party” from the museum’s collection, will be on view through June 2. The cost of admission to “Marisol” is $10.
