NEWLY POSTED: Sax 4th Avenue performs at St. Tim’s, Jan. 20

Sax 4th Avenue, a saxophone quartet made up of Bowling Green State University graduates, will open the St. Tim’s Discovers, the chamber music series sponsored by St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m..

The concert will be held in the sanctuary of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 871 East Boundary Street, Perrysburg. 


NEWLY POSTED: Brazilian jazz trio to perform at museum, Jan. 20

The André Mehmari Trio will perform at the Toledo Museum of Art’s GlasSalon Jan. 20  at 3 p.m. The Brazilian pianist and composer will be joined by Neymar Dias on double bass and Sérgio Reze on drums. 

For his January 2019 U.S. tour, Mehmari brings forth his piano trio with a new recording, “Na esquina do Clube com o Sol na Cabeça / Sunbakeheaded at Clube da Esquina,” devoted to the Brazilian recording artists who became known by, Clube da Esquina; the group released an album of the same name in 1972 .  He sees their work, led by Milton Nascimento, as the “utmost representation of humanism” in Brazilian music.

A longtime admirer of this “metaphysical club,” Mehmari’s trio explores, extends, and refines its work into new and compelling interpretations, drawing from diverse musical currents— pop, folk music, bossa nova, jazz, and avant-garde classical.

NEWLY POSTED: Mayor to address Exchange Club, Jan. 22

The Exchange Club of Bowling Green will welcome Mayor Richard Edwards as to discussed the state of the city at the club’s weekly luncheon meeting Tuesday, Jan. 22, at noon at the Stone Ridge Golf Club. Meetings are open to visitors that wish to learn more about the civic organization.

Edwards took office  on Jan. 1, 2012 and was re-elected to another four-year term that began Jan. 1, 2016.  Prior to being the mayor of BG, Edwards was a Wood County administrator for approximately six years.  Edwards previously worked at BGSU as a journalism teacher, secretary to the Board of Trustees and vice president of University relations.

Mayor Edwards has had numerous community involvements and awards, including Member and Past President of the BG Kiwanis Club; Outstanding Citizen of Bowling Green, 2008; Honorary Alumnus of the BGSU School of Journalism and member of the School’s Hall of Fame, 1982; and The Spirit of Wood County Award for Self-Government.


Polar bear story time set for Jan. 19

The Children’s Place of the Wood County District Public Library is offering a special storytime for babies and toddlers with caregivers on Saturday,  Jan. 19, at 10:30 a.m.

Our polar bear themed storytime will feature tips from the early literacy initiative Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library.  This early literacy initiative encourages parents and caregivers to talk, sing, read, write, and play with young children every day. Children’s Place staff will share stories about polar bears, songs, conversation, and play.

Family Rigamajig session, Jan. 20

Families are invited to play and build with the library’s Rigamajig, a giant building set, in the programming room of the Children’s Place of the Wood County District Public Library on Sunday, January 20th, from 2-3 PM.  The library staff will provide stories and books for creative ideas, as well as a group building challenge.

Lindsay Moore debuts new picture book, Jan. 22

Families are invited to join WCDPL’s celebratory book launch for Bowling Green author/illustrator Lindsay Moore and her new book “Sea Bear: A Journey for Survival” on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Library Atrium. “Sea Bear: A Journey for Survival” is Lindsay Moore’s debut picture book and has been well received by critics, earning starred reviews from both Kirkus and School Library Journal. Sea Bear is a deeply moving and informative story about perseverance, family, nature, and climate change that will resonate with readers of all ages.

‘Shutdown Dinner’ to aid furloughed workers, Jan. 23

 A “Shutdown Dinner” to benefit federal workers and their families who are being hurt by the government shutdown will be held Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist, in Bowling Green.

The organizers are asking that people to RSVP to 419-973-5841 if they plan to attend. Sonsored by the Wood County Green Party with the church.


Youth tennis clinics registration open until Jan. 28

Registration for the youth tennis clinics at the Bowling Green Community Center are now open.  The clinics are for ages 4-9 and will take place on Wednesdays from 4-4:50 p.m. (ages 4-6) and from 5-5:50 p.m. (ages 7-9).  The Bowling Green Community Tennis Association will lead these introductory clinics.  Instruction will include the fundamentals of tennis as well as develop motor skills relating to the sport.  Low compression tennis balls will be used and free loaner racquets are available.  Dates for the clinics are Jan. 30 to Feb. 27.  Costs are $35/resident and $44/non-resident.  The registration deadline is Monday, Jan. 28.  To register, please visit www.bgohio.org/parks or call 419-354-6223.

Employee handbooks focus of seminar, Jan. 29

The Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce will host a Lunch and Learn business seminar on Review Your Employee Handbook Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, 11:30 a.m. to  1 p.m. at The Four Corners Center, 130 S. Main St., Bowling Green, OH.  This seminar is being presented in partnership with The Employers’ Association and will be facilitated by Colleen House. Click for more details.

Andre Watts to perform Grieg concerto, Feb. 2

Pianist André Watts  will perform Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater.

The program will open Mendelssohn’s “The Hebrides ‘Fingal’s Cave,’” a piece that was chosen by TSO audiences, and close with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6.
