The Bowling Green Police Division would like to remind residents of a few safety reminders for answering your door.
- Think before you answer the door. Are you expecting anyone? If so do they have an appropriately marked vehicle?
- Use the peephole on your door to see who in knocking on your door.
- Ask for proper identification from repair or utility workers. Do not be afraid to ask. If they are legitimate they will not mind. If you need to verify the identification of the repair person take a photo of them so you can confirm their identity to others.
- If you need to confirm the identity of a visitor call their office to check on them. Do not call a number they supply to you. Look up the phone number in the phone book or search for the number on the internet.
- If you can not verify the identity of the visitor, reschedule the appointment for a later date.
- Do not dismiss your gut feeling that something is not right.
- Educate your family to keep them and your belongings safe.
- If you do not feel comfortable opening the door at all, then don’t. Ask them to leave through your door.
- If a visitor refuses to leave after being asked to or becomes argumentative close your door and do not allow them inside. Call 911 for police assistance.
