Pemberville Opera House to host ‘An Evening on the Titanic!’

Capt. Smith and Molly Brown

From PEMBERVILLE FREEDOM AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

On Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m., the Pemberville Opera House will present as the opening program in its “Live! In the House Concert Series,” “An Evening on the Titanic!” featuring the tales of Captain E. J. Smith and the Margaret Brown onboard the Titanic.

Guests will join Captain Smith and Margaret “Molly” Brown at the Captain’s party on the fateful evening of April 14, 1912, the night the Titanic struck an iceberg. Suitable for all ages, this drama is meant to be both educational and entertaining while dinner guests learn more about Captain Smith and Molly Brown, along with the people, music, fashion, sinking, and aftermath of the Titanic. The drama runs approximately one and a half hours and incorporates costumes, period music, photographs, and mementos to bring this story to life.

Captain Smith and Margaret Brown are played by Mark and Margaret Hyre. When first asked to portray Captain Smith at a Titanic dinner hosted by a local bed and breakfast, Mark saw a chance to portray an interesting historical character in an unconventional setting. He asked his wife, Margaret, to join him as “Molly” Brown.

Together, the couple has been amazed and humbled while researching these historical figures and learning the story of the ship. Their presentation is the result of years of research. To honor the memory of this tragedy, Mark and Margaret strive for historical accuracy with every word they’ve written. Their goal is not only to entertain, but also to educate audiences about one of the greatest tragedies in maritime history.

Front Street Cafe has partnered with the Pemberville Opera House for “An Evening on the Titanic!” The community is invited to join them before the show for specialty cocktails and hors d’oeuvres – exclusive to ticketholders. They will also be open after the performance for a nightcap.

With support from the Ohio Arts Council, the Pemberville Opera House concert series will continue next month, Nov. 1, when The Great Kaplan, an earnest Vaudeville performer, while just trying to do a good show, inexplicably gets caught in the crosshairs of the universe. Illusion, music, juggling, and deadpan comedy collide in this vaudevillesque spectacle. Tickets on sale now.
