Installation of the gravity sewer and water service lines on South Main Street in Bowling Green is nearing completion. On Friday, June 21, (weather permitting), the gravity sewer trench from Wooster Street to Clough Street will be paved with a hot mix asphalt. This will complete the utility portion of the work on South Main Street.
The work will shift to North Main Street beginning Monday, June 24, to continue installing water services. The 100 block of North Main, from Wooster to Court, will be closed to traffic during this time. The utility portion of the project is anticipated to last into July.
The paving portion of the project is expected to commence by July 1. The paving contractor is scheduled to begin this portion of the project by shifting both directions of traffic into the northbound lanes – one direction of travel in each lane.
Traffic cones and signs will be installed to transition traffic into the temporary traffic pattern. Once the traffic is shifted, the southbound lanes will be milled.
The contractor will call in OUPS to mark the various underground utilities – which will take at least two days. Once the utilities have been marked, the contractor will conduct base repairs that will include excavation of the area, pinning the edges with rebar, and installing concrete within the now fixed road base.
When the base repairs in the southbound lanes are complete, an intermediate course of asphalt will be applied and the contractor will repeat this process on the northbound lanes of South Main Street.
The remainder of the paving will occur within the downtown in a similar sequence. Wooster Street will also have the concrete base repaired and be repaved from Church Street to Prospect Street. The contractor will then
begin the various concrete repairs along the sidewalks and ADA ramps.
Once complete, the final surface course of asphalt will be applied. In total, the paving portion of the project will include isolated sidewalk restoration affected by the utility work, repairing of the brick bands along the sidewalk, ADA ramps, and bricks installed in the intersection of Main and Wooster.
Paving efforts are anticipated to last through the fall of 2019. The current contract completion date is Oct. 1, but weather and unforeseen conditions could extend past that date.
