Holly Hopewell Meyer, 91, passed away Thursday April 27, 2023. Holly was born in Newton, Massachusetts to parents Hilda Hutchinson & John Clark Hopewell. The eldest of six, Holly was determined, quiet and independent. She helped raise her younger siblings throughout their childhood in Framingham, Massachusetts and Westminster, Vermont.
Holly attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1949. There she met a charming young man, boldly asked to borrow a pencil and the rest was history. Holly married Robert Alan Meyer on March 26, 1951 in Westminster, Vermont. Together with their young children the Meyer family lived in a variety of places in New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York before settling in Rockville, Maryland in 1960.
In Rockville, Holly was a long-term active member of The League of Women Voters, the local Board of Elections and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville. An avid learner, Holly completed an Associates degree at George Washington University, became a certified occupational therapy assistant, and attended classes with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute well into her 80s. Holly enjoyed learning about history, politics, the environment, memoir writing and even explored copper enameling.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Holly is survived by husband Robert Meyer, children Kevin Meyer, Penelope Evans-Meyer (James), and Clark Meyer (Jodie), grandchildren Heidi Evans (Avery), Emily Evans, Anna Meyer (William) and Cara Meyer, sister Lucy Greenwood, brother Gregory Wood (Brenda) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial for Holly Meyer will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville on August 26, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be forwarded to the state of Maryland’s “Tree-Mendous Maryland Gift of Trees” program to plant trees in Montgomery County.
