BG Police arrest man reportedly found carrying large stolen crucifix near downtown area

Bowling Green Police arrested a man for theft after he was noticed carrying a large crucifix near the downtown area on Saturday (11/16).

An officer was on routine patrol around 11:30 p.m., driving southbound on North Prospect Street, near Pike Street, when he saw Dominic Deangelis, 19, of Bowling Green, walking southbound on the sidewalk holding a large crucifix in the air.

As the officer passed Deangelis and tapped on the brakes, Deangelis reportedly lowered the crucifix and immediately turned to walk eastbound through the Wood County Courthouse parking lot.

When the officer stopped the man, he allegedly tried to hide the crucifix behind his back. Deangelis reportedly told the officer that he had taken the crucifix from St. Thomas More University Parish, on Thurstin Street. The church sanctuary is not locked, so Deangelis reportedly takes the cross at night, uses it while telling people not to drink, then returns it when he is done.

Deangelis was taken to Wood County Jail.
