Salted Caramel Milky Way cookies are the favorite in Amber Peterson’s household.
On Monday night they were declared a community favorite as well. The Salted Caramel Milky Way cookies won first place in the Wood County District Public Library’s annual holiday bake-off.
The cookies came on top of a field that featured 32 bakers. The winner was decided by the about 200 people who attended, wandering among the sweets ladened tables on both the first and second floors of the libraries, dropping their ballots into the bags hanging nearby.
Kathy Sweeney won second place for her Pioneer cookies.
First place received $50 in Downtown Dollar. Second place, received $25.
The taste buds most important to Peterson are those of her husband, Riley, and their three children, ages 5, 2, and nine weeks.
Somehow, Peterson said, she still managed to get the cookies for the bake off done. Her eldest was at school during the day, and then would come home and help.
The Peterson family permanent home is in Utah. They are here for the year as Riley Peterson pursues dual masters degrees in history and German. Next year, they’ll be back in Utah, so the bake-off title will be up for grabs.
Among the other bakers was Violette Woolley, 9. She was offering her Black Swamp Brownie Brittle in the Children’s Place. Her father, Chad, was on hand but seated at a distance to let Violette handle the trade.
The recipe, she said, started with ”an oops” that she turned into a tasty treat.
Mrs. Santa Claus (Kathy East) was on hand to give out the awards. The students Hoehner Piano Studio by Vicki Hoehner & Bethany Slembarski provided holiday music.
