Water main break fixed after water cuts to county courthouse and BGSU buildings

City crews fixed the water main break around 3:30 p.m. today, after the break just north of East Court Street in Bowling Green left the Wood County Courthouse complex and some buildings on the Bowling Green State University campus without water.

Bowling Green Utilities and Infrastructure Director Brian O’Connell said around 12:30 p.m., that a 12-inch water main in the alley east of Enterprise Street and north of East Court Street had broken around 10 a.m. due to the extreme cold.

The city closed some valves in the area, but did not completely shut off the water, so a boil advisory did not need to be issued. However, the lower water pressure affected the water flow to taller buildings that have booster pumps.

East Court Street was flooded in the area of the break.

The site was excavated and city crews worked in the frigid temperatures to get it repaired.

“We’re trying to get this repaired as soon as we can,” O’Connell said. “We’ll get it done.”

O’Connell reported at Tuesday’s council meeting that the city has already experienced about eight water line breaks to extreme cold.

“That’s quite a few more than we had last year,” he reported to City Council.
