Wood County Humane Society speaker shares importance of pet care in senior care planning

Senior care professionals convened at the January Wood County Senior Resource Network meeting for a presentation titled “What About the Pets?” The keynote, delivered by Robert Goewey, humane agent with the Wood County Humane Society, underscored the critical need to address pet care considerations when providing services to senior citizens.

Goewey highlighted how pets play a vital role in the emotional and physical health of many seniors. His presentation focused on the importance of identifying any insecurities or challenges related to pet care during the initial stages of senior care planning. He encouraged caregivers to ask thoughtful questions to determine if additional resources or support are necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of both the senior and their pets.

The presentation also provided an array of community resources and practical solutions for addressing common pet care issues faced by seniors.

Goewey’s take away: have these conversations at intake of care and get into contact with the local humane society to ensure safety for both the senior and the pet. Goewey recalled several horrific encounters at homes where pets had been abandoned and if conversations started earlier, the story may have had a happier ending.

The Wood County Humane Society is committed to supporting both people and animals in the community and continues to offer educational initiatives designed to foster compassionate care.
