Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology Susan L. Brown will discuss the rising divorce rates among older Americans at the next BGSU Science Café Tuesday Feb. 18 from 6-7 p.m. at Juniper Brewing, 145 S Main St, Bowling Green. The event is free but registration is requested. Click here to register.

Brown serves as director of the Center for Family and Demographic Research and the co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research. A family demographer, she studies the rapid transformation of American family life, including recent changes in cohabitation, marriage, and divorce.

After peaking in 1979, the U.S. divorce rate has steadily declined. However, the risk of divorce for older adults (defined as ages 50+) has more than doubled over this period, reflecting the graying of divorce.

In this talk, Susan Brown will trace the rise of gray divorce in the U.S., addressing its causes and consequences. She will conclude with a discussion of how divorce patterns are likely to unfold in the future.

The talk will last about 30 minutes and is aimed at the general public and will be followed by about 30 minutes for questions and discussion with the speaker and others involved in the research.

This is one in a series of events to highlight the important work being done by BGSU researchers that impacts the quality of life in the region, state, and world.
