BG Fire Division extinguishes early morning apartment fire

Scene of apartment fire this morning on Fourth Street

Bowling Green Fire Division responded to a report of a possible natural gas leak early this morning (12/26) that turned out to be a fire in one of the apartment units.

The call came in at 4:21 a.m., from a 10-unit apartment building in the 800 block of Fourth Street. While most of the residents were gone for the holidays, the firefighters had to get four people out of the building.

As firefighters responded to the upstairs apartment where the gas leak was reported, they noticed smoke coming out of the eaves from the attic, Fire Capt. Nathan Espinoza said.

Because most of the units were unoccupied, firefighters had to break through several doors to check for the fire. Eventually, the fire was located in a first floor apartment, which did not have a working smoke detector, Espinoza said.

The resident of that unit had reportedly left for work, when the fire originated from the stove. That apartment is not habitable, but the others should be once the broken doors are repaired, Espinoza said.

No one was injured. Firefighters left the scene at 6:10 a.m.

Assisting BGFD on the scene were Mid County 120, Central Joint Fire Department and Middleton Township Fire Department.
