Bowling Green Police Division has issued about 20 warnings to residents and businesses for failing to shovel their sidewalks since last week’s snowstorm.
So far, the police are just giving “friendly reminders,” said Lt. Adam Skaff. A city ordinance does allow police to issue civil citations and has a provision in which city workers shovel the sidewalks then bill the property owners.
“I don’t believe we’ve utilized that at all this year. That’s not the city’s goal,” Skaff said. “We just want people to take care of it, so we don’t have to.”
Police respond to citizen complaints about snowy sidewalks, and are also allowed to issue warnings to properties that officers notice are unshoveled.
Of the 20 or so warnings issued in the past week, many were prompted by citizen complaints in residential areas. Police also responded to a complaint about a business on South Main Street, then went to other businesses on the street that had not cleared their walkways, Skaff said.
