BG woman with hunting knife charged with domestic violence and aggravated menacing

Bowling Green Police arrested a woman with a large hunting knife for domestic violence and aggravated menacing.

Police were called to an apartment complex in the 1500 block of East Clough Street, Sunday around 4:32 p.m., for a report of a woman threatening someone with a knife in the parking lot.

When police arrived, they found Amy Vermilya, 53, standing on her front step holding the knife. She told police that she and her husband were arguing and that she had the knife for self defense.

Another woman, who is a neighbor, told police she had heard arguing outside. As she was leaving for dinner, she approached Vermilya, who reportedly raised the knife and told her to go inside before she got stabbed.

The neighbor then called 911. She told police she believed Vermilya stabbed her husband, who was sitting in a car in the parking lot. Police called an ambulance.

The husband showed police a small piercing to his skin where the knife penetrated his leg. He also had a fresh cut under his eye, which he said occurred when he and his wife went to Walmart earlier in the day. He told police that his wife was yelling at him and punched him in the face, and he had to have Walmart fix his glasses.

The husband said he did not see the knife on the receipt from the store, so he assumed his wife stole it from Walmart. He also told police that his wife was off her medication.

Police asked Vermilya about the cut next to her husband’s eye. She reportedly said that he cut himself shaving, and he had a loose screw on his glasses, so that’s why they needed repaired.

The police report said that an officer talked with the husband about their numerous visits to the couple’s apartment, and noted that the situations seemed to be getting worse.

Vermilya was taken to Wood County Jail, and her husband was given information on being a victim of crime.
