Bowling Green State University is inviting the community, as well as BGSU alumni, students, families and employees, to celebrate its 100th Homecoming anniversary with special events Sept. 15-18 on the BGSU campus and in the City of Bowling Green.
Some of the events planned for the special, four-day BGSU Homecoming celebration include:
Welcome Back on Court Street: Party A kick-off to the 100th anniversary of BGSU Homecoming, the Welcome Back Party is a family-friendly event that will feature food, music, games and fun from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, while highlighting the University’s connection with alumni, students and the community.
Freddie and Frieda 5K: Participants can walk or run in the Freddie and Frieda 5K, which takes place at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, and starts at the new Alumni Gateway located at the intersection of Thurstin Avenue and Court Street. People will receive a 100th anniversary commemorative Homecoming T-shirt. Registrationis required.
Alumni Gateway dedication: After years of work to restore a welcoming entrance to campus, the community is invited to the dedication of the new Alumni Gateway at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the intersection of Thurstin Avenue and Court Street. The new gateway features an open-air plaza, fountain and inviting gathering areas in a park-like setting and highlights the generous contributions of BGSU alumni.
Falcon Flames vow renewal: Falcon Flames of all ages – married couples who both have degrees from the University – will gather outside Prout Chapel on the BGSU campus at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, for a vow renewal ceremony officiated by BGSU President Rodney K. Rogers. Preregistered couples will receive a certificate, commemorative button and a professional photo taken inside Prout Chapel. Registration for the event is now closed.
Falconland and Kids Falconland: Happening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, in and around the Bowen-Thompson Quadrangle, Falconland will feature multiple family-friendly events, including photos with BGSU mascots Freddie and Frieda Falcon, historical displays, building tours, live music and free food. Additionally, Kids Falconland will take place outside the Kuhlin Center during the same timeframe and will feature games, face-painting, photos and more.
800-meter kids fun run: Following an 11 a.m. meet and greet with Olympic gold medalist and BGSU alumnus Dave Wottle ’73 on the Bowen-Thompson Quadrangle, kids of all ages are invited to join the BGSU track team for an 800-meter run at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Perry Field House. Wottle will start the run, and attendees will be able to watch footage of his epic comeback win during the 1972 Olympic games. The first 50 people to attend will receive a commemorative Dave Wottle bobblehead.
Homecoming football game and fireworks: Cheer on the BGSU Football team as they take on Marshall at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Doyt L. Perry Stadium on the BGSU campus. Prior to the Falcons’ kickoff, the community is invited to a tailgate outside the Doyt for food, fun and festivities starting at 2 p.m. A free fireworks display will take place immediately after the game. Tickets for Saturday’s homecoming game are available for purchase at BGSUFalcons.com.
