Even though students are gone, Bowling Green State University is still reporting its number of cases of COVID-19 related to campus.
From Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, the university had 50 new cases, that’s half of what was reported last week. Of those cases 45 were students, two faculty, and three staff, and 82 percent were people who lived off campus. BGSU has 43 cases – 39 students, one faculty, and three staff — being actively monitored by county health departments.
In his update message, Chief Health Officer Ben Batey reported: “While we continue to track and report positive COVID-19 cases with anyone affiliated with our campus community, we are now more spread out in our hometown communities and more cases will likely go unreported to us.”
He encouraged those who test positive to self-report their results to health@bgsu.edu or the university’s COVID-19 hotline 419-372-3000. “Our contact tracers and COVID-19 team are continuing their work and can help you navigate next steps and answer any questions you have. Additionally, by reporting cases, we are able to better monitor trends and develop best practices for the spring semester. “
Only one student with COVID-19 is still isolated in campus housing and none are quarantined.
On Nov. 25, the university conducted 233 on demand tests, and detected four cases, a 1.7 percent positivity rate. Batey said these rapid tests will resume this month.
The university conducted 614 screening tests for targeted asymptomatic individuals from Nov. 22 through Nov. 27. Two positive cases were reported, a 0.3 percent positivity rate.
Since Aug. 20, BGSU has conducted 6,463 surveillance tests. During that period, BGSU has reported 922 positive cases – 877 students, 11 faculty, and 34 staff.
