Blaine Todd Childers

Blaine Todd Childers, age 58 of Bowling Green, passed away Tuesday August 30, 2022 at the Promedica Ebeid Hospice Residence in Sylvania, OH. Todd was born in Cherryville, NC to parents Norris Swain and Bobbie (Helms) Childers on February 15, 1964.

Todd spent his early years concentrating on his two passions: art and basketball. He attended the NC Governor’s School, a summer residential program for intellectually gifted and talented high school students in 1981. Todd played basketball throughout his school years and was especially proud of helping West Lincoln High win a conference championship in 1982.  He earned his Bachelor of Environmental Design in Visual Design at North Carolina State University in 1986 and then completed his Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design at California Institute of the Arts in 1993.

Todd and his wife Jennifer Karches moved to Bowling Green after tying the knot in Jamaica on June 23, 1994, and he began teaching graphic design at the BGSU School of Art as an Assistant Professor that fall, eventually earning the title of Associate Professor. He had a passion for graphic design and history of graphic design, and delighted in creating posters, fliers, web graphics, tv graphics, typefaces and anything else printed or on-screen, often staying up late at his work. Todd enjoyed professional success with many awards and his work appeared in dozens of international publications. He was particularly excited to see a typeface he created, named BurnOut, used in an Adult Swim Venture Brothers episode…one of our favorite TV series! After retiring from teaching in 2019 Todd continued his philanthropy of pro-bono work in updating or creating many publications and designs for local causes and organizations. Todd hoped to work on film and TV graphics after his teaching career, and he enjoyed success with his graphics for the WGTE-PBS series BackStory.

Todd is survived by his wife of 28 years, Jennifer; his brother Barry Kiply Childers and wife Stacy of Minneapolis; and his beloved cat companion Kitty Boy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brothers Doug and Kelly.

We will plan a gathering for Todd at a later date.
