As part of the Music at the Forefront series, Bowling Green State University will welcome electronic music artist Carl Stone for a free, public performance Monday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery of the Fine Arts Center.
A pioneer in live computer music, Stone has been hailed by the Village Voice as “the king of sampling” and “one of the best composers living in [the USA] today.”
Born in California, Stone studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts and has composed electro-acoustic music almost exclusively since 1972. In addition to composing, performing and touring, Stone is an emeritus professor in the Department of Media Engineering at Chukyo University in Japan. He currently divides his time between California and Japan.
In 1984 he was commissioned to compose a new work premiered as part of the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles.
Previously, Stone served as president of the American Music Center from 1992-1995, director of Meet the Composer/California from 1981-1997 and music director of KPFK-FM in Los Angeles from 1978-1981. He has also served as a regular columnist for Sound & Recording Magazine in Japan and web editor for Other Minds.
Stone’s music has been released on labels such as New Albion, CBS Sony, Toshiba-EMI, EAM Discs, Wizard Records, Trigram, t:me recordings, New Tone/Robi Droli, Unseen World and others. His works have been performed in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and the Near East.
