Diesel spill causes pile up on I-75 in Rossford

Green Patrol Post responded to a multi vehicle crash on Interstate 75 north of the Buck Road exit (mile post 197) in the City of Rossford.
Hugo Gutierrez, age 36 of London, Ontario was driving a 1994 Peterbilt semi-truck southbound on Interstate 75 when the driver’s side fuel tank became partially detached. The tank began dragging on the roadway and ruptured. Diesel fuel began to spill onto the roadway causing several vehicles to lose control and crash.

Once Gutierrez’s vehicle came to a stop, a total of 10 vehicles sustained damage.

Gutierrez’s vehicle lost an estimated 300 gallons of diesel fuel. Several of the drivers involved in the crash sustained minor injuries, but no one was transported from the scene.

Interstate 75 remained closed for approximately three and a half hours.

The crash remains under investigation, although Mr. Gutierrez was cited for operating an unsafe vehicle.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Rossford Police Department, Rossford Fire & EMS, Northwood Police Department, ODOT and Ohio EMA.
