Drifting snow causes issues for BG Fire Division

Bowling Green east side fire station

Drifting snow overnight has complicated the work of the Bowling Green Fire Division.

Fire Chief Bill Moorman is asking that people clear snow from around fire hydrants if possible. As he was driving around the city this morning, he noticed at least half of the hydrants are buried under snow.

Drifting roadways have been an issue this morning, with two ambulances getting stuck in snow drifts, and the chief getting stuck on his way to work.

Monday night, fire crews were delayed slightly by road conditions on their way to a fire at 525 W. Gypsy Lane Road. The call came in at 10:18 p.m., after the resident said he thought he heard water dripping in the kitchen. When he went to investigate, he heard a crackling sound from the ceiling.

The resident thought the noise was from the heavy snow load on the roof, but when he opened the back door he saw smoke coming from the eaves.

Firefighters had to remove the gable vent and apply water to the attic area. The heaviest damage appeared to be in the area above the furnace and vent pipe, according to the fire report.
