Graphic novels join library’s line up of book clubs

For the new year, the Wood County District Public Library has book discussion groups for readers of varying interests.

Graphic novels

The library’s newest book discussion, The Graphic Readers! focuses on the graphic novel. The group will take a deeper look into how this medium adds an additional visual layer to literature. 

The group meets Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room A & B at the Bowling Green Library.

Books to be discussed are:

  • January 11 – “The Dark Knight Returns” by Frank Miller
  • February 8 – “Black Hole” by Charles Burns
  • March 8 – “Fun Home”by Alison Bechdel
  • April 12 – “Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass” by Mariko Tamaki

Bone Chilling

Bone Chilling Book Discussion to discuss a new horror, mystery, thriller, or suspense novel every month. Discussions are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Meeting Room A & B at the Bowling Green library.

Books to be discussed are:

  • January 10 – “The Sun Down Motel” by Simon St. James
  • February 14 – “Our Kind of Cruelty” by Araminta Hall
  • March 14 – “The Girl from Widow Hills” by Megan Miranda
  • April 11 – Nothing More to Tell by Karen M. McManus
  • May 9 – “His & Hers” by Alice Feeney
  • June 13 – “Confessions on the 7:45” by Lisa Unger

Artful Reader

The Artful Reader book discussion is aimed at those with a creative bent. Meetings are Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Room A & B at the Bowling Green Library. Meetings begin with a 30-minute book discussion on the selected book of the month, and are then followed by a creative  activity for 30-45 minutes. 

Books to be discussed are:

  • January 18 –“Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert. Activity: intuitive painting.
  • February 15 –“The Improbability of Love” by Hannah Rothschild. Activity: collage.
  • March 15 – “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Tracy Chevalier. Activity: capturing light and shadow.
  • April 19 – “The Butterfly’s Daughter” by Mary Monroe. Activity: decorate a pot or box.
  • May 17 – “The Venice Sketchbook” by Rhys Bowen. Activity: journals & sketchbooks.

Bring Your Own Book

Join the Silent Book Club movement with the Wood County District Public Library’s Bring Your Own Book (BYOBook) Discussion! Book discussions are held on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. at the Bowling Green Library. Dates for book club meetings are Jan. 19, Feb. 16, March 16, April 20, and May 18.

Participants will meet, take some time to share what they’re reading, and then set aside 20 to 30 minutes per meeting of uninterrupted time to continue reading your current book. This book club is for people who are busy and who may feel they have no time to read, and this discussion provides an opportunity to share the love of reading with others and get ideas for what to read next.

Just the Facts

The Just the Facts book group will discuss new nonfiction titles each month.

Meetings are held Tuesdays at 11a.m. in Meeting Room A & B at the Bowling Green Library.

  • February 28 –“The Monster’s Bones” by David Randall
  • March 28 – “What My Bones Know” by Stephanie Foo

Coffee Talk Book

Readers will discuss popular novels, bestsellers, and new reads this new year on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. in Meeting Room C at the Bowling Green Library.

  • February 23 – “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt
  • March 23 – “Black Cake” by Charmaine Wilkerson
