Horizon Youth Theatre is proud to present “The Commedia Pinocchio,” written by Lane Riosley, this weekend at Bowling Green City Park’s Needle Hall, 520 Conneaut Avenue. Shows are Friday and Saturday August 14 and 15 at 7 pm, and Sunday August 16 at 2 pm. Admission is by donation.
First time director Leo Roberts-Zibbel, who is a BGSU theatre student and HYT alumnus, explains: “Commedia dell’arte is a form of theatre that emerged in Italy in the 16th century. It was commonly performed for audiences that spoke different languages, therefore the physicality of the acting is extreme,” using masks and recognizable stock characters such as Arlequin (a mischievous troublemaker) and Columbine (a capable and smart young woman). The term “slapstick” originates from this era of theatre, and commedia dell’arte originated a genre of comedy still performed today. “Our production of The Commedia Pinocchio is a look back at an important theatrical movement,” he concludes.
