Lois “Louie” Ann Haberstock, 90, of Waterville, Ohio, passed away on October 3, 2026. She was born November 19, 1935, to Frank “Cap” and Ina (Shroyer) Van Vorhis. She married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Haberstock, and he preceded her in death.
Lois prided herself on growing up on a farm in Mermill, Ohio. She often reminisced about her responsibilities on the farm, such as milking the cows every morning and caring for the chicks. While it was hard work, it was one of the most important times of her life.
Her friends and family can all agree that Lois was one of the best at making a home-cooked meal. Her mother, Ina, passed down her recipes to Lois, who then happily taught them to her daughter, Lisa, and granddaughters. When Lois was just a young girl, everyone knew her for her delicious homemade pies and Lady Baltimore cakes, which she then sold to locals in Wood County.
When she met Richard, who came from the big city of Toledo, she fell in love with traveling across the country in search of adventures together. Together, they had some of their best times whale watching in Hawaii and walking along the beach. They were basically a “nature’s nursery” before the local one was established. Lois was so caring when it came to raising animals; she could’ve practically raised her own zoo. From dogs and cats to turkeys and even peacocks, Lois always said yes to welcoming a new animal into the Haberstock home.
Lois also had a knack for business. As a team, she and Richard built their business, “Haberstock Custom Homes,” from the ground up, helping families plant their roots in Lucas and Wood Counties and bring their dream homes to life. She shared her love of building with her daughter, and together they built Lisa’s first home. Lois and Lisa shared many memories, but one towards the top of the list was their trip to Las Vegas… but “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!”
Later in life, due to declining health, Richard needed extra care, and Lois was there by his side through everything. She was a selfless individual who always was sure to put others before herself. Even in difficult moments, she never failed to make Richard smile. Their love lasted a lifetime and more.
Lois brought her love of Hawaii to Waterville, where she would teach her granddaughters, Grace and Madeline, how to perform the Hula properly. Every Christmas, she was sure to sing one of her favorite holiday songs, “Mele Kalikimaka,” or “Merry Christmas” in Hawaiian. She used her party-planning talents to host big festivities and make Christmas special for everyone.
Lois’ family would like to thank all the wonderful nurses, aides, and staff at Browning Masonic Community – Pathways, who took such great care of her. You truly gave her a “home away from home,” and will always be in our hearts. Also, thank you to Lois’ caregiver and friend, Denise. Lois always loved the trips to your home, where she could sit, enjoy nature, and look out at your pond. Your loyalty and friendship won’t be forgotten.
We’d also like to express our gratitude for the care provided by Residential Hospice. They went out of their way to ensure a peaceful transition. Not only did they support Lois, but they also stayed by our side as well, and we are very appreciative.
She is survived by her daughter Lisa Haberstock-Jeffer (Scott) and grandchildren Grace and Madeline.
Also, half-daughter Sandy Cocolin (Ted), Dana Vargo (Pat), Christopher Cocolin (Tara), Alex Cocolin, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Cap and Ina Van Vorhis, her husband, Richard, and her siblings Everett Van Vorhis, Emerson Van Vorhis, Floyd Van Vorhis, Eileen Becker, Willow Van Vorhis, and Jean Flynn.
