Lois J Hiltner

Lois J. Hiltner, 91, of Bowling Green, Ohio passed away Saturday August 3, 2024. She was born on February 17, 1933, in Mansfield, Ohio to George and Martha (Gerberich) Reichert. She married John Hiltner on November 26, 1959, and he preceded her in death in 2019.

Lois graduated from BGSU. She was a teacher, first in Mansfield, then at Crim School in Bowling Green and then as a long-term substitute in the BG Schools. She taught first grade and loved encouraging young readers.

Lois was a long-time member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where she served as a greeter, coffee server, and funeral dinner volunteer and was a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of numerous organizations such as the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, PEO, Bowling Green Sorosis Club, Wood County Hospital Guild, Wood County Retired Teachers, and Ohio Retired Teachers. She volunteered at the Wood County Senior Center and was a driver and former President of the Meals on Wheels in Bowling Green. Lois enjoyed time quilting but found her greatest enjoyment spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her legacy of kindness and unconditional love, along with playing games and reading, are what her grandchildren remember. She never met a baby she wouldn’t hold, and had the gift of making people feel loved and respected.

Lois is survived by her children Martha (Jim) Woelke, John (Ann) Hiltner, Gretchen (Todd) Martin, and Joel (Helena) Hiltner. Also surviving are her grandchildren Sarah (Daniel) Steck, Seth (Katie) Woelke, Cameron (Evan) Mack, Emma Hiltner, Jack Hiltner, Rachel (Elias) Schuh, Elissa (Nathan) Manion, Samuel Martin, Joshua Martin, Zachary Martin, Emerson Hiltner, and Eliza Hiltner as well as 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, and her brother and sister-in-law.

The family will have a graveside service. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the church in November; details will follow.
