Maria Cristina Lopez De Alvarez

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Maria Cristina Lopez De Alvarez, a vibrant and determined woman who graced our lives from January 29th, 1950, until her peaceful departure on October 22nd, 2026, in Bowling Green, Ohio. Maria lived a life full of love for her family, with her daughters, Lorena Cristina (†), Carmen Lizeth, and Vanessa Isabel, and her cherished grandkids always close to her heart.

Born in Mexico, Maria worked as a cashier in a pharmacy for 16 years until her youngest daughter was born. That was the transition to dedicate her life to her daughters and later on her grandchildren. In 1997, she made the choice to leave the love of her life, Victor Manuel Alvarez Sosa, because she was determined to create a better life for her daughters. That year, she courageously moved to Brownsville, Texas, a decision her daughters always thanked her for. She left her extended family, her social life, the love of her life, the place she called home for her daughters’ benefit. In 2012, she moved to Ohio to lend a helping hand with her grandchildren. Maria was an independent and strong woman who was able to make life changing decisions to benefit her family. Maria was a force of nature who loved walking, shopping, playing cards, going to the casino, dancing, and reading. Throughout her years in Bowling Green, she read the entire Spanish section from Wood County Public Library.

Maria had her own style; she was always fashionable and put together, and she had a fun birthday tradition of trying out a new restaurant each year. Everyone who knew her understood that she was a strong, independent woman who was fiercely protective of her kids. She extended her love, support, and protection to her grandchildren the moment they were born. She was present for the birth of all her grandchildren. She was always one-hour early to get the best seat to see her grandchildren’s concerts, sports games, recognition ceremonies, and birthday parties. Maria continued a tradition that started with her parents. Maria’s parents will buy Lorena, Carmen, and Vanessa ice cream every other weekend. Orlando, Manny, Zuley, and Isabel grew up knowing their gramiti (gra-me-ti – as they called her) will get them ice cream in exchange for extra kisses and hugs.

She is survived by her daughters Carmen and Vanessa; ; her brothers, Manuel de Jesus Lopez Ruiz, Casar Humberto (Juana) Lopez Ruiz, and Rodolfo Lopez Ruiz; grandchildren: Orlando, Manny, Zuley, Isabel and a beloved son-in-law, Manuel Ramirez Escanuelas, who all will miss her deeply. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Lorena Cristina, parents: Manuel de Jesus and Maria Isabel and her sister, Alma Leticia.

We invite friends and family to come together to celebrate Maria’s life. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2026 from 4:00pm until her time of her funeral mass at 6:00pm at St. Aloysius Church, Bowling Green, Ohio.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to assist with funeral expenses, c/o Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home.
