Wood County Hospital’s New Year’s Baby is a born procrastinator.
Her mom, Samantha Senn of Bowling Green, went to the hospital on New Year’s Day, Wednesday. But baby Kailani Aurora Senn didn’t make her appearance until Friday at 8:39 a.m.
She showed up with a headful of black hair, weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces, and measuring 19 inches.
Kailani – named after the Hawaiian word meaning sea and sky – was well worth the wait, said her mom.
She is the first child for Senn, who works at the Bowling Green Dollar Tree store.
Kailani is also the first grandbaby for Senn’s parents – who had been up to greet their New Year’s grandchild earlier on Friday.
“Dad posted it all over Facebook,” Senn said.
Kailani was not planned by Senn – but was a welcome surprise.
“I’m definitely a true believer that everything happens for a reason,” Senn said.
Senn said she knew that Kailani was going to be a girl.
“Either way I would have been happy, but I knew she was going to be a girl,” the new mom said.
Senn, a 2009 graduate of Bowling Green High School, has plans for a baby room decorated with the theme of “The Little Mermaid” – fitting for a little baby girl named after the sea and the sky.
As the New Year’s Baby Girl for the Wood County Birthing Center, Kailani was given a knitted hat made by Donald Navarre, a handmade onesie saying “Hello 2020” from Amanda Barndt, and a blanket knitted by Helen Graber.
Kailani’s slumber was momentarily interrupted so she could be decked out in her new clothes for her official “New Year’s Baby” photos. The disruption gave the bundle of joy a chance to test her lungs.
But within seconds, once reunited with her mom, Kailani was fast asleep once again.
The New Year’s Baby Boy at the Wood County Birthing Center will also receive a handmade cap, onesie and blanket. But as of Friday, the first boy was yet to be born.
Even with her procrastination, Kailani managed to beat her boy competition for the New Year’s title.
