Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? The answer to that question is the title of Waterville Playshop’s next musical! Adapted from the iconic Nickelodeon series, “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Playshop is proud to present the regional premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical simply titled “SpongeBob the Musical.” The character of SpongeBob has been entertaining TV audiences for over 20 years, and now he will be live on the Maumee Indoor Stage.
Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m., at the Maumee Indoor Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at www.watervilleplayshop.org. Adult tickets are $17, and student/senior tickets are $15. They will also be available at the door.
Originally created for television by Stephen Hillenberg, SpongeBob has been reimagined for a musical production by Tina Landau. Kyle Jarrow has written a new story for this musical’s book, and several of your favorite performance artists have contributed original songs for this new musical. Some of those artists include Sara Bareilles, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, and Panic! at the Disco; ensuring that the stage show is even more fun and energetic than the television cartoon!
The stakes are higher than ever in Bikini Bottom, home to our spongy friend! The city faces complete annihilation when a volcano threatens to erupt. And when chaos ensues and hope disappears, the most unexpected of heroes emerges to try to prove he can manage any situation! SpongeBob is back in his most dramatic adventure yet, setting out to demonstrate how optimism and friendship really can save the day.
This is a show that is sure to be fun for audiences of all ages. If you love the television cartoon, you will adore the musical; and if you don’t really care for the show, you will still enjoy the live musical production. And with such craziness going on in the world, what a perfect time to take a visit under the sea!
Cast includes: Patrick (Matthew Badyna), Sandy (Avery Snyder), SpongeBob (Dylan Coale), and Squidward (Jeffrey Beam).
Director Matt Zwyer leads this dynamic cast of actors from all over the Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan area. Jenny Jackson is the music director, and Sarah Matlow is the choreographer.
Both the cast and creative team can’t wait for you to join us in Bikini Bottom for the best day ever! As SpongeBob would say, “I’m ready! I’m ready!”
