A Michigan couple was arrested Monday (9/2) after they reportedly tried to steal $1,692 in merchandise from Walmart. The couple went to jail, their dog went to the Wood County Dog Shelter, and their cat to the Wood County Humane Society.

Arrested for felony theft were Treka Mason, 40, of Walled Lake, and Kevin Mehay, 52, of Wolverine Lake.

Bowling Green Police were called around 3:15 p.m., after the store’s asset protection employees stopped the couple as they tried leaving the store. Mason reportedly told police she wasn’t stealing, but just walking the merchandise past registers, and going out to get her checkbook.

In the cart was clothing, beauty and home decor items.

Mehay told police he believed the items were paid for, so he pulled up to the store’s front doors, and parked in the fire lane, with the couple’s rented UHaul truck that was towing their car.

Police reportedly allowed Mason to check on the dog, then an officer took it to the dog shelter for safe keeping. A humane agent from the Humane Society was called to pick up the cat.

Officers reportedly got permission from Walmart to leave the UHaul and the towed vehicle in the lot, as long as they were moved from the front door. The couple told police they were moving from Michigan to Kentucky, and currently had no permanent address.

Mehay and Mason were transported to Wood County Jail. However, once there, Mason reportedly told police that she needed all her medication from the UHaul or she would have a seizure. She reportedly denied police entry to the UHaul to obtain her medication, so BG Fire Division was called to transport Mason to Wood County Hospital, where she was cleared so she could be booked into the jail.
