Sylvia DuBois

Sylvia DuBois (Liss) of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away Friday, March 3rd, 2017. She is survived by her daughter, Miranda Liss, her significant other Phil Flores, and her sister Carol Labajetta (Rennecker). Sylvia is survived by her extensive extended families, on both the DuBois and Flores sides. She is preceded in death by her mother, Harriet Labajetta, as well as her former-husband Jerry Liss.

Her loss will be felt by her friends and family all over Ohio, California, and Michigan, as well as her work-family at Pisanello’s Pizza in Bowling Green. Sylvia remained on as an owner/operator at Pisanello’s until the day of her passing. She was a joyful friend and an influential mentor to many throughout the Northwest Ohio area, and will be dearly missed.

Sylvia was born in Kent, Ohio, into a family of book-dealers and attended Kent State University School, meeting Jerry Liss and eventually moving to Bowling Green, in 1965. She and Jerry opened and operated Pisanello’s Pizza together, until his passing in 2014. Sylvia and her daughter took over as owner-operators, shortly after. She worked in many different capacities at the pizza shop, from the 1960s until the day of her passing.

Sylvia loved animals. She was involved with the Wood County Humane Society, and served on the board as treasurer and president, over the years. Her affinity for animals was a personal passion that lasted all her life, often choosing to adopt rescue pets. She was active with many charitable organizations in the area, including the “Holiday with a Heart” gala, in Toledo. She loved playing cards with her friends, and hosting gatherings at her home. She often went to auctions and was an avid supporter of the arts, hosting a music festival on her own property in September 2016. She was a collector of unique artworks, including a large collection of hand-blown glass and other eclectic pieces. Sylvia was a loving, empathetic friend, always ready with an infectious joke or laugh.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Wood County Humane Society, the Wood County Public Library, and the Promise House project. A gathering of remembrance will be held Wednesday, March 8th, at Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1460 W. Wooster St., P.O Box 648, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402 from 2pm to 6pm.
