Waterville Playshop doubles the fun with ‘Addams Family’

From MATTHEW ZWYER

Waterville Playshop PR Trustee& Addams Family Music Director

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky; they’re all together ooky…the Addams family. If you grew up in the 60’s or enjoy 60’s TV shows, you know the tune for that theme song and know exactly when you should snap your fingers. Playshop’s first production for this season is a musical based on none other than “The Addams Family.”  With a hilarious book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, and with a lively score by Andrew Lippa, the musical version revives these timeless characters live on stage, ready to make us laugh yet again.

In this story, Wednesday Addams has grown up and is getting married—to a kind, normal boy from a respectable, normal family.  She informs her family that there will be a dinner to meet her boyfriend, and she drops the nuptial bombshell in secret to her loving father, Gomez.  He, while reeling from the news, must also do something he has never done before—keep the secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Will the family survive these secrets or the crazy (yet “normal”) dinner party to come?

And this Playshop show, for the first time in over two decades, features a double cast for the production. That means you have the chance to see two casts in action.  Director Durrell Johnson describes the unique casting opportunity like this: “We have been able to involve so many more performers and truly build on the community spirit that Playshop strives to foster. Every show is exactly the same, and completely different at the same time! Each cast gives us as an audience something new to be enjoyed at every twist and turn.”

Teaming with Johnson are Assistant Director Bradley King, Choreographer Cathleen Coughlin, and Musical Directors Matt Zwyer and Jennifer Jackson,

Performances are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, November 14 through 16, at 8 pm, and Sunday, November 17 at 2:30, at the Maumee Indoor Theatre. The “Chalice” cast performs Thursday and Saturday; the “Crypt” cast performs Friday and Sunday.  Tickets are on sale now at www.watervilleplayshop.org. Adults pay $17, and student/senior tickets are $15. Tickets will also be available at the door.
