Community bands celebrate 15th year of music, May 18

The Bowling Green Area Community Bands will celebrate their Crystal Anniversary with a concert Saturday, May 18 at 7 p.m.  in the Bowling Green Performing Arts Center, 530 W. Poe Road, Bowling Green. The concert features the BGACB Concert Band and  the BiG Band BG.

Carl Holmquist will be guest composer and conductor for the celebration. He will lead he band in the world premiere of “To Ardent Service” for concert band  commissioned by BGACB.

The concert  will also feature Teresa Disbrow on clarinet and dancers from Julie’s Dance Studio. 

Thomas R. Headley and Catherine Lewis will conduct with the big band directed by Rob Cintron and Brian Bushong.

Trinity United Methodist holding rummage sale, May 16-18

Trinity United Methodist Church will holds its Spring Rummage Sale on Thursday, May 16 from 9 a.m to 6 p.m., Friday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. 

There are many items available, including one-of-a-kind vintage items. 

This sale benefits Trinity’s Missions Team and their projects and ministries. 

Trinity UMC is located at 200 N. Summit S. in Bowling Green. 

Anesa Miller do read from new novel, May 19

Writer Anesa Miller, from Bowling Green, will read and discuss “I Never Do This” Sunday, May 19, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at Gathering Volumes, 196 East South Boundary, Perrysburg.

According to the publisher Sybelline Press: “This Rust Belt gothic novel presents the unforgettable voice of a young woman, LaDene Faye Howell, who finds herself in police custody recounting her story after her paroled cousin Bobbie Frank appears and engages her in a crime spree.”

Tickets on sale for Players’ comedy ‘Life Sucks,’ weekends through May 19

Tickets are now on sale for the Black Swamp Players production of by Aaron Posner’s comedy “Life Sucks” on stage at the Oak Street theater May 10, 11, 17, and 18 at  8 p.m. with Sunday matinees May 12 and 19 at 2 p.m.

The cast features Andrew Packard, Story Moosa, Mackenzie Baumhower, Libby Allen Dachik, Jim Dachik, Kevin Caudill, and Diana DePasquale.

The play, directed by Sara Lipinski Chambers, is a modern re-imagining of Chekov’s “Uncle Vanya.” According to Playbill: “The play follows a group of old friends, ex-lovers, estranged in-laws, and lifelong enemies, who gather to grapple with life’s thorniest questions—and each other.”

Trinity United hosts free community meal, May 21

Trinity United Methodist Church will host a Trinity Tuesday Table, a free community meal, in the Fellowship Hall at Trinity United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. 

Doors will open at 5:15pm and volunteers will be preparing a Taco Tuesday meal. The meal includes live music, socializing, and lively conversation.

Downtown BG Farmers Market opens for the season

The BG Farmers Market presented by Work Leads to Independence continues in the parking lot on the corner of South Main and Clough streets each  Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. through Oct. 16.

The market features fresh produce from area farms as well as baked goods, sauces, jams, crafts, activities for kids, music, and information from local non-profit agencies.

This year the market will feature Power of Produce a program to teach kids about the value of eating fruits and vegetables. Each child will receive a $2 token to purchase vegetables and fruits of their choice.

Library hosting monthly Chess Nights May through August

The Wood County District Public Library hosts a monthly Chess Night the first Monday of the month, May through August, at 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Room C in Bowling Green.

Dates are May 6, June 3, July 1 and Aug. 5 

Chess Night is a casual, open chess meet-up that welcomes all skill levels. Players will have an opportunity to learn, practice and meet other community members interested in chess.

Some chess boards will be provided (no chess clocks will be available), and bringing your own chess board is welcomed and encouraged.

‘Marisol: A Retrospective’ continues at the Toledo Museum through June 2

“Marisol: A Retrospective,” an exhibit featuring work from throughout the artist’s 60-year career, including “The Party” from the museum’s collection, will be on view through June 2. The cost of admission to “Marisol” is $10.
