The Black Swamp Players return to the stage with “For Peter Pan On Her 70th Birthday,” on stage at the Oak Street Theatre February 21-23, 28 & March 1-2. See below for details about this show and other area arts offerings.

Yevgeny Yontov to showcase music for piano by BGSU colleagues, Feb. 5

Pianist Yevgeny Yontov, will feature three pieces by BGSU composers on a Faculty Artist recital, Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall on campus.

The program will include: 

  • “Boreal” (in progress, 2024-2025) by  Michael Laurello 
  • “Five reflections on the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám “ by Christopher Dietz 
  • “La Folia II: Lacuna “ by Marilyn Shrude

The recital will begin with “Two Memories” by Katherine Balch and “Wrung and snapt” by Hilary Purrington. The second half will be devoted to Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat major.)

The free public concert will also be live streamed.

History Department hosts lecture on Emmett Till memorial, Feb. 4

Dr. Modupe Labode will present the 2025 Black History Month Guest Lecture “Reckoning with Remembrance: Interpreting the Life and Legacy of Emmett Till at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History”, hosted by the Department of History as part of BGSU’s Black History Month program, on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 11:30 a.m. in Olscamp Hall 115.

Labode is the Curator of the Division of Political History at the National Museum of American History.

BGSU Men’s Chorus to perform, Feb. 5

The BGSU University Men’s Chorus will perform Wednesday Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in First United Methodist Church 1524 E. Wooster Street

This will be a preview concert before the chorus’s performance at Ohio Music Education Association

Rotary hosts BGSU vice provost & library dean, Feb. 6

Sara Bushong, vice provost for faculty affairs at BGSU and dean of University Libraries, will address the Bowling Green Rotary Club, Thursday, Feb. 6.

The meeting begins with lunch at 11:45 a.m. at the Bowling Green Country Club, 923 Fairview Ave., Bowling Green.

Kiwanis to hear talk about elementary school music, Feb. 6

The Bowling Green Kiwanis Club will celebrate local educators throughout the month of February. The Teacher Appreciation Month will begin with Heather Kramer, music teacher at Kenwood Elementary, as the featured speaker at the organization’s meeting on Thursday, Feb. 6. 

The meeting will be held at noon in the Slater Family Ice Arena Lounge on the Bowling Green State University campus. The public is invited to attend, with lunch available from 11:30 a.m. for $15.

Kramer’s presentation, titled “Rewards and Challenges of Teaching Elementary Music,” will share her experiences in the classroom.

‘Savannah Sipping Society’ on stage in Toledo, Feb. 7-16

The Village Players will present “Savannah Sipping Society,”  weekends Feb 7 through Feb. 16 at the troupe’s home at 2740 Upton Ave. Toledo.

The play is a comedy, about  four Southern women, all needing to escape the sameness of their day-to-day routines, who are drawn together by Fate and an impromptu happy hour. They decide it’s high time to reclaim the enthusiasm for the life they’ve lost through the years.

Show times are Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, February 8 at 7 p.m. and  Sunday, Feb. 9  at 2 p.m. continuing Thursday, Feb. 13 Friday, Feb. 14, and  Saturday, Feb.  15 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. Click for tickets.

Toledo Opera’s ‘South Pacific’ on stage 6 Valentine, Feb. 14 & 16

Toledo Opera will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” on Friday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Valentine Theatre, 400 North Superior, Toledo. To buy tickets, visit: toledoopera.org.

Directed by James Norman with conductor J. Ernest Green and choreographer Domonique Glover, the musical stars Claire Leyden as Nellie Forbush, Metropolitan Opera Baritone Keith Phares as Emile de Becque, Mike Schwitter as Lt. Joseph Cable, and Kamryn Loy as Bloody Mary. “South Pacific”will be presented in English with English captions.

A free Pre-Opera Talk one hour before each show in the Grand Lobby of the Valentine Theatre. Former Toledo Opera Resident Artist and regional soprano Grace Wipfli, will provide historical context and insight and will be available to take questions after the talk.

Tickets are now on sale for the Black Swamp Players’ production of “For Peter Pan On Her 70th Birthday,” on stage at the Oak Street Theatre February 21-23, 28 & March 1-2.

Sarah Ruhl’s play is described as: “A loving look at a family’s view of death, life and the allure of never growing up.”

The cast features Fran Martone, in the title role, with Renee Harrington, Gary Insch, Karen Noble, Naykishia D. D. Darby, and Hans Giller  along with the dog Ozzy Giller.

Showtimes are: Friday, Feb. 21, Saturday, Feb. 22,  Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundys, Feb. 23 and March 2 at 1:30 p.m. Click for tickets.

Library hosts monthly graphic novel discussion for kids

Students aged 5-11 and up are invited to a book discussion about some favorite early reader graphic novels at WCDPL Mondays at 6 p.m. once a month in The Children’s Place.
Copies of the graphic novel for each month are available for checkout from the Bowling Green Library.

Just Baby ‘N Me storytimes at library on Tuesdays

Just Baby ‘N Me is a lap-sit storytime ideal for babies. This unique storytime will be on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.in The Children’s Place at the Bowling Green Library.

This lap-sit storytime is great for babies from birth through early walkers (12 months). The focus during storytime is on rhymes, songs, finger plays, and exploring short books together, and is meant to facilitate interaction between you and your baby to develop their language and early literacy skills.

Library hosting Fiber Friends Creative Circle on Tuesdays

The Wood County District Public Library is hosting Fiber Friends Creative Circle on Tuesdays at 10  beginning in the 2nd Floor meeting room.

Fiber Friends is a fun and social program that meets to chat and create. People of all skill levels are welcome. Even if ysomeone  has never picked up knitting needles or a crochet hook, this group can teach the basic skills to get started on your newest hobby.
