Music for oboe & piano featured on BGSU recital, Sept. 18

Dwight Parry, oboe, with  Solungga Liu, piano will present a Faculty Artist Series concert, Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 8 p.m. in  Bryan Recital Hall in Moore Musical Arts Center on the BGSU campus.

The free, public recital will also be live streamed.

The program will be:

  • Fantasy No. 2 in A minor  by Georg Telemann
  • “Desert Fable No. 2”  by  Jenni Brandon from “The Rock and the Chuckwalla: Basking in the Sun”
  • Oboe Sonata by Francis Poulenc
  • Elegy for Oboe and Piano by Ulysses Kay
  • Concerto for Oboe by Wolfgang Mozart
  • Three bands to perform at museum music series finale, Sept. 19
  • Music at the Museum Presented by Visit BG Ohio will conclude its season with a musical triple bill on Thursday, Sept. 19 starting at 6 p.m.  on the east wing porch of the historic County Home building.
  • Performing will be: 
  • Grand Royale Ükuleists of the Black Swamp (GRÜBS), 6 p.m. 
  • Trip-Lettes, 7 p.m.
  • Corduroy Road, 8 p.m.
  • Concert-goers are asked to bring chairs or blankets for lawn seating.  Food trucks will also be onsite – The Tamale Guy, Jikoni Toledo, and  BD’s Lemonade King

Hub New Music presents concert at BGSU, Sept. 19

The Detroit-based group Hub New Music will perform a Music at the Forefront concert Thursday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. on in Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center on the BGSU campus

The free concert presented y the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music will also be livestreamed.

Founded in 2013, Hub features a distinctive quartet of flute, clarinet, violin and cello and actively collaborates with celebrated composers on projects that traverse rich musical landscapes. 

‘The Medic’s Wife’ author to speak twice in BG, Sept. 19

Edmund A. Kruszynski, author of the best-selling book “The Medic’s Wife.” will visit Bowling Green Thursday.

He will be the guest speaker for the Bowling Green Kiwanis Club meeting on Sept. 19 at ts noon meeting and then will speak at the Wood County District Public Library at 2 p.m.

The Kiwanis meet at the Slater Family Ice Arena Lounge, at BGSU, with lunch available for $15 starting at 11:30 a.m. The organization’s meeting begins at noon, followed by the guest speakers. The public is invited to attend.

“The Medic’s Wife” is a story of love, war, and secrets, inspired by the true experiences of Kruszynski’s father during World War II.

Kruszynski, a Bowling Green State University graduate and retired executive from Procter & Gamble, will share the journey behind writing “The Medic’s Wife” In his talk, he will explore how his father’s harrowing experiences as a medic during World War II inspired the narrative and the creative process of transforming those personal memories into a compelling story.

TSO to play live with ‘Harry Potter & the Chambers of Secrets,’ Sept. 20

The Toledo Symphony Orchestra will perform the score live as the film “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” at the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns, Toledo, Friday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” cars fly, trees fight back and a mysterious house-elf comes to warn Harry Potter at the start of his second year at Hogwarts. Adventure and danger await when bloody writing on a wall announces: The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. To save Hogwarts will require all of Harry, Ron and Hermione’s magical abilities and courage.

Cookbook author celebrates joy of vegetables, Sept. 21

Award-winning cookbook author Cara Mangini will speak on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. in the Wood County District Public Library Atrium. Author of “The Vegetable Butcher: How to Select, Prep, Slice, Dice, and Masterfully Cook Vegetables from Artichokes to Zucchini,” Mangini will discuss her work as a chef, creator and author.

Concert to raise funds for Palestinian relief, Sept. 22

A benefit concert for Palestine will be held Sunday, Sept. 22 from 2-7 p.m. on the Bowen-Thompson Quadrangle on the BGSU campus.

The headliner will be Respirator with One Billion Lions, Othermother, and The Hearthrobs.

Donations are encouraged. All proceeds will be going to international Palestinian relief efforts.

The concert is being sponsored by Respirator, Beautiful Rats Records, and the BG Socialists.

Village of Portage celebrates 200th birthday, Sept. 22

The Village of Portage will be celebrating the 200th Birthday of the village on Sunday Sept. 22. 

The Village will start the celebration at 11 a.m. with a Parade through the heart of the village, ending at Enright Park followed by a celebration in the park from noon to 4 p.m.

Activities include a car show, historical display the history of Portage, music, vendors, food, and activities for children.

Toledo Rep staging ‘Children of Eden,’ through Sept. 29

The Toledo Repertoire Theatre will stage “Children of Eden” weekends Sept. 13 through Sept. 29 at the Tenth Street Stage, 16 Tenth Street, Toledo.

Showtimes are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

Applebutter Fest scheduled for Oct. 13

The Applebutter Fest in Grand Rapids sponsored by the Grand Rapids Historical Society will be held Sunday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the village.

Library hosting chess nights

Adults can visit the Wood County District Public Library during Chess Nights on Sept. 9, Oct. 7, Nov.4 and Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room to play chess.

Chess Nights are a casual, open chess meet-up for adults that welcomes all skill levels. Players will have the opportunity to learn, practice and meet other community members interested in chess.

Just Baby ‘N Me storytimes at library on Tuesdays

Just Baby ‘N Me is a lap-sit storytime ideal for babies. This unique storytime will be on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.in The Children’s Place at the Bowling Green Library.

This lap-sit storytime is great for babies from birth through early walkers (12 months). The focus during storytime is on rhymes, songs, finger plays, and exploring short books together, and is meant to facilitate interaction between you and your baby to develop their language and early literacy skills.

Library hosting Fiber Friends Creative Circle on Tuesdays

The Wood County District Public Library is hosting Fiber Friends Creative Circle on Tuesdays at 10  beginning Sept. 3 in the 2nd Floor meeting room.

Fiber Friends is a fun and social program that meets to chat and create. People of all skill levels are welcome. Even if ysomeone  has never picked up knitting needles or a crochet hook, this group can teach the basic skills to get started on your newest hobby.

Downtown BG Farmers Market open for the season

The BG Farmers Market presented by Work Leads to Independence continues in the parking lot on the corner of South Main and Clough streets each  Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. through Oct. 16.

The market features fresh produce from area farms as well as baked goods, sauces, jams, crafts, activities for kids, music, and information from local non-profit agencies.

This year the market will feature Power of Produce a program to teach kids about the value of eating fruits and vegetables. Each child will receive a $2 token to purchase vegetables and fruits of their choice.
