Wood County residents should be alert for possible severe weather overnight

Wood County Emergency Management Agency encourages all residents to stay aware of the potential for severe weather tonight (March 10) as forecasters warn of possible severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Because storms may occur while many people are asleep, Wood County officials strongly encourage the public to ensure they have multiple, reliable methods for receiving emergency alerts.

Current forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate the potential for severe weather, including the possibility of tornadoes. While this does not guarantee that severe storms will occur, the threat is meaningful enough that residents should remain alert and prepared.

Residents should take the following precautions before going to bed:

• Turn mobile phone ringers on and set them to high volume.

• Fully charge devices and keep them within reach.

• Prepare essential items in case quick evacuation becomes necessary, including shoes, flashlights, medications, clothing, toiletries, and snacks.

It is important to note that Wood County no longer uses the CodeRED system for mass notifications. Anyone who previously relied on CodeRED should not expect to receive alerts through that platform and should immediately establish other contact methods, including:

• Local news and weather apps

• FEMA’s mobile app

• NOAA weather radio

• Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled on mobile phones

Wood County is currently transitioning to a new mass‑notification provider, Everbridge. While Wood County EMA can manually push an emergency notification to some residents, the full system is not yet active and must not be considered the sole means of receiving emergency warnings. Residents should continue to rely on multiple notification methods.

Once Everbridge’s automated weather‑alert opt‑in system is fully operational, Wood County EMA will release a public registration link that will allow residents to choose the types of alerts they wish to receive and how they would like to receive them.

Wood County EMA will provide updates through its social media platforms and local media partners as new information becomes available.
