From GARDEN GROUP OF GFWC WOMEN’S CLUB OF BOWLING GREEN

Members of garden group of GFWC Women’s Club of Bowling Green gathered on July 15, at the home of Pam Vollmar, who first gave a short presentation on the monarch butterfly. Carol Ballard also gave a short presentation on orchids. She told members how to grow orchids successfully with appropriate soil, lighting and moisture.

Vollmar also gave a presentation on her glass pieces, explaining materials, designing, firing, tools, and machinery needed, many examples of her work, and offered a tour of her workshop.

The garden group Holiday Art and Craft Show raffle basket, “Art in the Garden,” is near completion, which includes a glass piece donated by Vollmar.

The Bowling Green north end welcome sign plant watering schedule continues. The garden group maintains this planting throughout the summer, providing a colorful welcome to the city for visitors from the north.

Two members have signed up for the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs Convention that will take place Aug. 17-19, in Dublin.

In standing committee reports, Jo Vernon shared that Birds & Blooms magazine advises that “we don’t need to feed birds in the summer, but we do so to bring them closer to us just for enjoyment.” Sharon Daniels was unable to attend but sent word about advising to water plants in early morning or evening and avoid the middle of the hot days for best results.

Garden Group does not meet in August but volunteers will work at the Wood County Fair at the flower show and sales table. The next meeting will be on Sept. 16 at A Drop of Honey in Grand Rapids.
