Social media sensation Brittany Broski visited BGSU for a live show to bring her signature humor and life tips to the student body to begin homecoming week. Broski started out posting funny videos on TikTok and now has three channels on YouTube: her personal channel, “The Broski Report” and “Royal Court.”

The talk was hosted by Laura Sandlin, a graduate student at BGSU, and was structured like a conversation between friends. Sandlin and Broski had a comfortable back-and-forth discussing both light and heavy topics.

They discussed Broski’s path to fame, how she transitioned from being known as the “Kombucha girl” after posting a viral TikTok of herself trying kombucha to having stars like David Corenswet and Timothée Chalamet on her show, “Royal Court.” While she was starting her journey as a social media presence, her mantra was simply “just keep posting.”

That is exactly what she did. She would post from the bathroom or lying in her bed and talk about anything. Her goal was to post content that people could relate to. Her advice to anyone who was trying to follow in her footsteps was to have a backup plan.

Broski stressed the importance of getting a college education so that no matter where you end up, you always have a degree to fall back on. Even with everything she has accomplished, she still has a backup plan in case it all falls apart one day.

She plans to go back to school and become a Spanish professor specializing in the origin of the language and the different dialects. Broski has a strong passion for language and the origin of words, which she has expressed many times on her podcast.

Sandlin also asked Broski about her current hyperfixations and hobbies, which include etymology, knitting, and her most recent watching a TikTok live of a girl picking dandruff out of wigs. They also discussed their most recent reads and their favorite books, like The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

While discussing books, Sandlin brought up the conversation of book boyfriends, or favorite male characters, which led to a debate about which fictional man would be a better boyfriend. The conclusion was that Sarah J Maas’ character Rhysand or Rowan Whitethorn were Broski’s favorites.

They also covered more serious topics that Broski is passionate about, like the implications of AI on the arts and media and the pushback that she has been seeing against it by other creators. Broski also talks about the portrayal of women in Hollywood and how they are often depicted in the male gaze, which can cause damage to the image of women in everyday life.

One of Broski’s core values is authenticity and making sure that she is always herself on and off camera. This is a characteristic she shares with her friends and fellow social media stars like Drew Afualo and Caleb Hearon and encourages in all of her fans.

The University Activities Organization put the event together after finding out that a lot of students would be interested in having her visit campus. UAO reached out to Broski’s agent in the spring and was able to get her to be the opening act for homecoming week.

Her parting words to the audience were a call for everyone to strive to live fully.

“Sacrifice the need to be liked for a more fulfilling life,” Broski said, “Don’t be afraid to be freaky.”
