Wood County Port Authority and Park District sets open house for Chessie Circle Trail bridge project

Map shows the plan for the Wood County section of the Chessie Circle Trail.

From WOOD COUNTY PORT AUTHORITY

The Wood County Port Authority and the Wood County Park District, in cooperation with local government entities, including the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Chessie Circle Trail Committee, are inviting the public to participate in an open house on a feasibility study for a potential pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Maumee River.

The open house will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 5 – 7 p.m., at the Nature Center Facility at the W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg.

This is an open-house-style meeting; attendees can stop by anytime during open house hours to view project exhibits, chat with project team members, and submit comments. No formal presentation will be given.

The purpose of the open house is to provide an overview of the feasibility study to the community, answer questions, and gather input. The potential project proposes the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Maumee River, connecting the Chessie Circle Trail at River Road in Lucas County to the newly constructed trail section south of East River Road, in Wood County.

Study details

The feasibility study will examine options for bridge types, environmental considerations, aesthetic designs, projected costs, and funding sources. The proposed bridge site is near the Ohio Turnpike, next to the former railroad bridge. The project would start at River Road in Lucas County, connect to the existing Chessie Circle Trail, and continue to River Road in Wood County, where it would join the planned extension of the Chessie Circle Trail south of East River Road. The study aims to assess whether the project is feasible and, if so, to identify appropriate next steps for moving forward.

Because this project is still in the study phase of project development, the exact impacts are not known. There is no anticipated need for right-of-way. Detailed environmental impacts are unknown at this time but will be determined during the detailed design phase. Potential impacts could include ecological, such as waterways and large trees suitable for bats, and additional regulated materials work. The proposed project should have minimal impact on vehicle traffic but could impact recreational use on the Maumee River.
