League of Women Voters of BG to host ‘Civil Discourse as an Act of Courage’ workshop

From LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF BOWLING GREEN

The League of Women Voters of Bowling Green (LWVBG), in partnership with the Rise Advocates Movement, invites the community to the “Civil Discourse as an Act of Courage” workshop on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 126 S. Church St.

Participants will engage in interactive discussions and practical exercises designed to strengthen listening skills, empathy, and mutual respect. This half-day workshop offers tools to help individuals navigate challenging conversations with confidence and care.

“True civil discourse isn’t about winning arguments,” said Diana Patton, co-facilitator of the workshop. “It’s about showing up grounded in who you are, confident in your values, and open enough to understand another human being’s lived experience. In a polarized world, choosing to listen is a profound act of courage.”

Sharlyn Katzner, co-facilitator of the workshop added, “Civil discourse isn’t just about talking. It’s also about actively listening so that another’s perspective can challenge and expand our own without threatening our integrity.”

Patton is a national speaker, consultant, author, former corporate executive, and civil rights attorney. She is the founder and CEO of the Rise Advocates Movement and the Rise Advocates Academy, where she empowers professional women to find and use their voices, build confidence, and engage with others and their organizations with purpose and courage. Drawing on decades of experience advocating for diversity, equity, inclusion, and personal empowerment, Patton brings insight into building authentic connection and meaningful dialogue in today’s society.

Katzner currently serves as the president of LWVBG, on the board of LWVBG, and is an ambassador and coach of the Rise Advocates Movement. She brings her passion for civic engagement and thoughtful dialogue to this interactive workshop. Under her leadership, LWVBG continues to champion democracy, informed participation, and community connection through programs that bring people together across perspectives.

The event is free and open to the public. A soup lunch will be provided. Attendees can register by contacting the League of Women Voters of Bowling Green at info@lwvbg.org.
