Joseph R. DeMare plans to officially announce his candidacy for Wood County Commissioner at an event being held at the Grass Roots reuse and resale store, 22544 N. Dixie Highway, Perrysburg, on Saturday, May 23, at 1 p.m.

DeMare turned in over 600 petition signatures in order to be placed on the November ballot as an independent candidate.

“We had over a dozen petitioners, gathering signatures all over Wood County. I’m grateful to all of them, and I’m grateful to the many people who signed my petition when they heard that there would be a candidate who is fully opposed to more data centers in Wood County,” DeMare said.

DeMare is the co-chair of the Wood County Green Party and is endorsed by them, though he will be on the ballot as an independent as Ohio took away the Green Party’s status in 2018. He will be running to unseat incumbent Republican Doris Herringshaw.

“The Meta data center should never have received a positive recommendation from the Wood County Planning Commission,” said DeMare. “It should not have received 15 years of tax abatement. Projects like this threaten our rural, agricultural character, and I vow not to sign any NDAs, not to approve any data centers, and to fight to keep Wood County the quiet, rural place that we value so much. When elected officials make bad decisions that hurt the community, they need to be removed. It’s time for a change. Republicans and Democrats are literally tearing this country up, fighting partisan battles. It’s time to get serious about ending two-party rule. Electing an independent in a local race like this one is an important first step in breaking the two-party system that hasn’t been working for average Americans for a very long time.”
