From DIABETES YOUTH SERVICES
Diabetes Youth Services has announced Brandi Menchhofer, LPN of Frank Elementary School in Perrysburg, as the 2026 DYS School Caregiver of the Year.
This recognition celebrates school nurses, administrative professionals, and caregivers who go above and beyond to support students living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) while helping create safe, compassionate, and inclusive school environments for all students.
Menchhofer was nominated by the family of a student living with T1D, who share powerful stories of her compassion, dedication, communication, and life-saving care throughout the school year. From helping manage the daily challenges of T1D to responding calmly and skillfully during medical emergencies, Menchhofer’s unwavering support made a profound difference for both the student and her family.
“For the safety she provides, the trust she has built, and the genuine love she shows every day, I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition that Nurse Brandi,” wrote the nominating parent.
In addition to recognizing this year’s recipient, DYS proudly honored all nominated caregivers across its service area. The nominees included school nurses and school professionals from multiple districts and schools across its 38-county service area in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, recognized by families for their compassion, advocacy, and commitment to student well-being.
“Every single nominee represents the heart of what school support should look like for children living with type 1 diabetes,” said Morgan Johnson, director of program and education. “These caregivers provide far more than medical assistance. They provide reassurance, safety, encouragement, and trust to both students and families every day.”
Families shared stories of caregivers helping students navigate blood sugar challenges, advocating for their needs in the classroom, offering emotional support, and ensuring children feel safe and included at school.
DYS emphasized that while the award highlights excellence in diabetes care, these caregivers positively impact all students within their school communities through their kindness, leadership, and dedication. The organization extended a congratulations to Menchhofer and appreciation to every caregiver nominated for this year’s recognition.
