“Silicon as a Material Building Block for Influencing Positive Environmental Transformation” will be the topic for the next BGSU Science Café livestreamed Tuesday, April 19, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Dr. Joseph Furgal, assistant professor of chemistry and researcher in the center for photochemical sciences will discuss how the use of silicon-based materials can positively influence earth’s environment through various methods. Including, smart sponge pollutant remediation of perfluoroalkyls [PFAS], aromatic hydrocarbons, and nano plastics. Additionally, methods to synthesize silicon-based compounds using greener methods such as silicon computer chips with built in upcycling reuse of consumer and industrial silicone polymer products; and lastly, how coatings derived from silicon can preserve our past for future enjoyment.

This is one in a series of events to highlight the important work being done by BGSU researchers that impacts the quality of life in our region, state, and world
