The Black Swamp Players will present “War Paint,” a mesmerizing musical that tells the story of legendary 20th-century businesswomen Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. The show with music by Scott Frankel, lyrics by Michael Korie, and book by Doug Wright, will be performed in the Black Swamp Players theater, 115 E Oak St. in downtown Bowling Green.
“War Paint” is a two-act musical that delves into the lives of Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein, two women who revolutionized the cosmetics industry. The play is set between the 1930s and the 1960s, and it vividly depicts the intense competition, industry development, and the breaking of barriers by these iconic women.

“War Paint” premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago before moving to Broadway and earning four Tony Award nominations. The cast, led by Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, delivered impressive performances under Michael Greif’s direction. Besides on Broadway, this musical has only seen a handful of other productions since its inception in 2016, so Bowling Green theatergoers are in for a treat. This is the only production currently playing anywhere in the world.
The story explores the dynamic relationship between Arden and Rubinstein, including their challenges and successes, and how their rivalry and ambition shaped the cosmetics industry’s evolution. This musical portrays a captivating and fascinating glimpse into the lives of these pioneering women. If theatergoers recognize these ladies’ names, they know they are in for a treat. And if they don’t know who these women are, they should see this show and learn. While it sounds like this is a musical all about makeup, it is so much more. At its core, “War Paint” is a show about America – t he country’s history, drama, and potential.
