Bowling Green State University students and local residents are teaming up for a community service event, “Rock The Block,” scheduled for Saturday April 6. A rain date is set for April 13. This initiative, organized by the Bowling Green Save Our Neighborhoods Group (BG SONG), intends to bring the community together to assist local homeowners with yard work, exterior maintenance and minor repairs at no cost.
The initiative is seeking volunteers and donations, inviting the entire Bowling Green community to get involved. Individuals, businesses and organizations interested in signing up to volunteer or donate funds and supplies will find details at www.bgsong.org/events and may contact bowlinggreensong@gmail.com or BG SONG President Rose Drain at 419-450-2233 with questions.
“Rock The Block” is a testament to the power of community solidarity and the shared goal of enhancing our neighborhoods. Nearly 400 homeowners in the older Bowling Green neighborhoods received an invitation to participate. While 15 households initially applied for assistance, as word spread about the event, BG SONG received additional applications.
Accommodating all the requests will depend on the success of volunteer recruitment and fundraising.
Homeowners range from families with young children to individuals in their 90s, highlighting the broad appeal and necessity of this inaugural event. Three fourths of the requests are from individuals or couples who are over the age of 65. Several of the homeowners’ projects will require two work dates. Those will be completed on May 4.
BG SONG is partnering with a leadership course offered at Bowling Green State University, centered around service learning and servant leadership. This collaboration provides students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the practical application of leadership theories within their local community. Through hands-on experiences and active engagement, students and BG SONG are ready to restore, revitalize and reinvent Bowling Green.
Bowling Green Save Our Neighborhoods Group is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of Bowling Green neighborhoods. Through initiatives like “Rock The Block,” BG SONG aims to engage residents of the city including members of the BGSU community in efforts to enhance the quality of life for all citizens.
While “Rock The Block” is a neighborhood cleanup event, it’s also a movement toward building a stronger, more united Bowling Green. Members of the community are invited to join the effort on April 6 in working together to uplift our neighborhoods and foster a sense of pride and community spirit.
