Jon Husted tapped to fill U.S. Senate vacancy

Lt. Gov. Jon Husted acknowledges Gov. Mike DeWine at the announcement of the Northwest Ohio Glass Innovation Hub in Perrysburg earlier this year.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has tapped Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted to fill the state’s U.S. Senate vacancy.

JD Vance has resigned for from the Senate as he gets ready to serve as vice president of the United States. He along with President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated on Monday, Jan. 20.

In a statement, DeWine explained his selection. “”There were many people who I considered very qualified to serve in the U.S. Senate to represent the State of Ohio, but I came to the conclusion that the best person to serve is a person who has been close to me for the last six years – a person who I work with almost daily —  and that is Lt. Governor Jon Husted. I have worked with him, I know he is knowledgeable, I know his heart, I know what he cares about, and I know his skills. All of that tells me he is the right person for the job.”

Husted has also served as Ohio secretary of state, speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, and a member of the Ohio Senate.

Husted has been at DeWine’s side since assuming office in 2019, sharing the spotlight for major announcements.

Born in Detroit, Husted, 57,  was placed in a foster home after he was born. He was adopted by his parents Jim and Judy Husted. He grew up in Williams County and graduated from Montpelier High School and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dayton, where he played football.
