BGSU ends vaccine mandate

Mikinzi Pigman, a freshman from Mansfield, gets her first vaccine March 30, 2021, on campus.

Bowling Green State University announced last Thursday that it would not require students, faculty, nor staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Vaccines and boosters are still “strongly recommended,” according tto a statement released by the university’s Chief Health and Wellness Officer Ben Batey.

“With the high vaccination rate, access to fast and reliable testing, the improvements in treatments along with a better understanding of this virus, we continue to adjust our planning moving forward. As we look ahead to the fall, we recognize that we have never been in a better position to manage COVID-19,” he writes.

More than 90 percent of faculty and staff were vaccinated while about 80 percent of students were.

All could ask for exemptions based on medical, religious, or personal conscience reasons, and they were virtually all granted.

The university successfully had a lawsuit against its vaccination mandate.
