Bowling Green Area Community Bands to host jubilee concert, ‘Celebration!’

From BOWLING GREEN AREA COMMUNITY BANDS

The Bowling Green Area Community Bands (BGACB) invites the community to join a jubilee of music with its featured concert, “Celebration!” This concert will be held on Sunday, March 1, at 4 p.m. at the Bowling Green Performing Arts Center, 530 W. Poe Road. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m.

The highlight of this performance will be a world premiere performance of “Meditations on Vision and Praise” by guest composer, Dr. Timothy Mahr. This new piece was commissioned by the band to honor the tenure of BGACB conductor emeritus, Thom Headley. Primary soloists are Kim Kucharski on flute, Jennifer Amon on piccolo, Aidan Peper on soprano saxophone, and Jeff Metzger on piano.

Bruce Corrigan will conduct the band in “Serenade for Wind Band,” by Derek Bourgois; “Appalachian Journey Featuring Traditional Fiddle Tunes,” by Brant Karrick; “Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann,” by William Davis and featuring bassoon soloist Catherine Lewis, and “Concerto D’Amore,” by Jacob de Haan.

Headley will return with his baton to conduct the band through “A Common Devotion,” written by local composer Ryan R. Brechmacher, with soloists Kim Kucharski on flute, Patty Bringolf on oboe, Teresa Disbrow on clarinet, Mark Patton on alto sax, and Stephanie DeCroix on horn. Headley will also conduct the band through “The Dam Busters,” by Eric Coates and arranged by W.J. Duthoit.

BiG Band BG will play “Route 66,” by Bobby Troup and arranged by Michael Sweeney with soloists Gabe Hagedorn on piano and Adam Young on trumpet; “Brother Mister,” by Christian McBride and arranged by Mike Kamuf with soloists John Skolits on alto tenor sax, Eric McClanahan on trombone, John Kloor on trombone, and Dave Middleton on drum set; and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” by Jeff Zawinul and arranged by Paul Jennings with soloist Dan Shelhaus on alto sax.

The concert is free and open to the public. Due to construction, attendees are asked to enter from Poe Road and follow the directions to parking on the northwest side of campus.
