Bowling Green High School senior receives $3,000 public power scholarship

From AMERICAN MUNICIPAL POWER INC.

American Municipal Power Inc. has announced that Julia Barnett of Bowling Green is one of five recipients of the 2026 Lyle B. Wright scholarship. This year, AMP is awarding 10 scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

Wright was a strong public power advocate who served on the AMP board of trustees from 1979 until his death in 1986. The $3,000 scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors whose households receive electricity from and AMP member utility. This year, 32 students were nominated for the Wright Scholarship, and the recipients were selected based on their scholastic records, personal achievements, and scores on a test about public power.

The daughter of Michael and Rachel Barnett, Julia is a graduating senior at Bowling Green High School and plans to attend the University of Michigan to study biomedical engineering. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Bowling Green High School Madrigals and Treble Choirs, a two-time member of the Ohio Music Education Association All-State Choir, and is a four-year letter-winner in tennis and track and field, holding the school’s indoor record for the 60-meter and 200-meter dash events.

“It is great to have a strong municipal electric community like Bowling Green as home to one of this year’s Wright Scholarship recipients,” said Jolene Thompson, AMP president and CEO. “This year’s group of scholarship applicants was outstanding. On behalf of the AMP board of trustees and AMP management, I congratulate Miss Barnett on her exceptional achievements, and I extend best wishes for success in her educational pursuits.”

The AMP board of trustees established the Richard H. Gorsuch and Lyle B. Wright scholarships in memory of public power leaders who contributed significantly to AMP and municipal electric systems in the region.

Since 1988, AMP has awarded $558,000 to high school seniors though the AMP Scholarships Program. For more information about the program, click here.
