The Bowling Green Human Relations Commission recognizes the International Day of Peace today, Sept. 21. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, this day emphasizes non-violence and ceasefires. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, there are currently 27 ongoing global conflicts, which include issues of political instability, as well as interstate and civil wars.
For 2026, the United Nations has designated the theme “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day” for the International Day of Peace. The theme aims to honor the “everyday architects of peace” – individuals who are driving local actions, laying the groundwork for stability, and building lasting peace from the ground up.
The United Nations encourages everyone, everywhere to contribute to peace in their own way. Here are some suggestions:
- Help someone in need
- Lend a voice to drive positive change
- Host a peace circle, which is an intergenerational, youth-led conversation focused on solutions
- Use platform to promote a cause or share a story of peace and hope
For individuals or organizations in Bowling Green that exemplify peace, the Human Relations Commission is currently accepting nominations for both the Honor Roll and Drum Major for Peace Awards.
The Honor Roll recognizes local organizations, businesses, or individuals who have made significant contributions to improving human relations within the community and promoting respect for diversity through educational initiatives and advocacy.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Peace Award honors those who actively promote justice, peace, and respect in the Bowling Green community.
Nominations for both awards are due by Nov. 30.
