From WOOD COUNTY SAFE COMMUNITIES
Wood County Safe Communities will be hosting a CarFit event on Friday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Middleton Township Hall, located at 21745 State Route 25, Bowling Green. The community is invited to a day of education, food, and comradery – plus the opportunity to receive a CarFit inspection. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a light breakfast provided.
The event will feature two informative presentations:
- Corey Anderson, RN, BSN, from the University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC), who will speak about the “Stop the Bleed” program
- Dr. Mile Brujic, who will discuss “Maintaining Eye Health for Mature Drivers”
The CarFit event is more than just a check-up for people’s cars – it’s a chance to improve driver safety and awareness, especially for older adults, according to Sandy Wiechman, coordinator for Safe Communities of Wood County. “There’s a lot more to safe driving than just how you drive,” she said. “Having the proper fit inside your vehicle can make a big difference and help protect you and those around you. With CarFit – an educational program developed by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association – you’ll receive information and resources to help enhance you safety behind the wheel.”
The CarFit program provides participants with a 12-point checklist, helping drivers assess key aspects such as seat positioning, mirror alignment, steering wheel distance, and more. Trained technicians and health professionals will work one-on-one with each participant and make personalized adjustments and offer tips that can increase comfort and reduce risk while driving.
Wiechman emphasized that CarFit is not a driving test or a vehicle inspection, but an educational service aimed at keeping drivers safe and confident on the road.
The community-focused event is free and open to the public, though reservations are encouraged. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Sandy Wiechman at slwiech@bgsu.edu or 419-277-3245.
